WHO WE ARE IN CHRIST PART 1

By Evelyn Brooks

The bornagain experience is the greatest miracle of all. It literally took our old nature of a sinful man and changed us into a new creation, causing us to become the sons and daughters of God himself! It is an awesome thing.
Many volumes could be written on who we are in Christ. Meaning, what happened to us when we became bornagain and how did it changed things for us, what rights, privileges and freedoms did the new birth bring to us. The scriptures I will give you here are the tip of the iceburge. I urge you to read the New Testament for yourself paying close attention to verses that say "in Christ" or "in whom". Here the scriptures are speaking of you and what Christ's death and resurrection did for you. Of course all of the New Testament is as fresh, new, and usable today as it was when it was written. The Old Testament or Covenant is also, but it shadows and types the New Testament or Covenant.

When we accept Jesus as our Lord , the old man dies and our Spirit is recreated. We are no longer a sinner but the very righteousness of God!

2 Corinthians 5:17 and 21
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

God knows who you are now, satan knows, all the demons know, the angels know but the problem is that the average Christian does not even begin to know who he is in Christ Jesus. He doesn't know the power and authority he has been given. He doesn't know the many gifts that have freely been given to him by God. As long as we don't know who we are , our new standing does us little good. Most Chirstians believe that being born again gives them a ticket to heaven but little more than that. Getting to go to heaven when we die in itself is marvelous but there is so much more. These gifts and privileges that I am talking about has been given to us by God for two primary reasons.

1) He loves us and wants us to benefit personally from their use and 2) To use to benefit others by helping people and bringing more people to Him.

We are an extension of Christ. The work He did, we were recreated to pick this up right where He left off and continue doing the same things he did. We are to be his hands, we are to be his feet, we are to be his mouth. He has given us his authority to do these things for him. We are to carry on his ministry and his work in the earth.

You might say "well, he was God I am only a mere man". No, I will show you how he laid down his God authority, came to earth as a man in every way and thru his death and resurrection caused us to be raised up or promoted to his standing while on earth, making a way for us to be holy and clean in the Fathers eyes and passing his authoriy on to us by his name.

This enabled us to do exactly the same things he did, which were healing the sick, casting out devils, raising the dead, teaching and preaching truth, and working miracles of all kinds. We cannot do these things without the reborn spirit but we can with it. All of these things are done by the power of the Holy Spirit but only when we first have knowledge and understanding of Gods word and secondly when we have faith in God and his word. Remember, the Kingdom of God works by faith.

Hebrews 2:6b-18 "What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor and put everything under his feet: In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him, yet at present we do not see everthing subject to him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
Jesus tasted spiritual death by going to hell. He went so we wouldn't have have to, paying the price for our sin because he never sinned himself. V. 10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. He says, I will declare your name to my brothers; "in the presence of the congregation, I will sing your praises." And again, "I will put my trust in him." and again he says, "Here am I, and the children God has given me." v14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death-that is, the devil-and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham's descendants (thats us!) . v 17. For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

John 17:5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. (This is part of Jesus's prayer right before he was taken to die. This shows that while he was on earth he had laid down his former glory)

Ephesians 1:6-10 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. (Read all of Ephesians 1 and 2 for better understanding.)

Luke 10:18-20 Jesus replied, "I saw satan fall like lightnig from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.
This was not only for the seventy two disciples but to all Jesus's disciples who will believe and act, God said that he is no respector or persons what he will do for one he will do for all. We have to believe Gods word because he is not a man that he would lie. Actually, he cannot lie. It is impossible.

Mark 16:15 Jesus said to them, "Go into the world and preach the good news to all creation, Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: (thats you!) In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands, and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well." After Jesus had spoken this to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.

Remember all this is by faith in Gods word and the authority invested in us thru the name of Jesus. No faith--No works such as these. Remember, you could not have even been saved without faith in Gods word concerning salvation. If people don't beleive, they will not be saved but salvation is still available to them. So in order for Gods word to be truth in our lives we must build our faith which is done by hearing the word over and over until revelation is birthed and faith rises up. We do all this with the measure of faith given to everyone by God.

John 14:12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing, He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

This is Jesus talking to his disciples. Are you a disciple of Chirst? Are you bornagain by the blood of Jesus? If you are bornagain then you are a disciple and Jesus was talking to you.

These scriptures are only the beginning. There are many many that shows that Christ laid down his Godship and came to earth as a man. He lived sin free, gave his own life for our atonement. He then went to hell -- took the keys to death, hell and the grave. He rose up in power and glory, lifting us up to sit in high places with him, giving us power and autority over the powers of darkness. He stripped satan of all authority. All satan has now is what Gods creation gives him through ignorance, unbelief and sin.

This is only the foundation of this teaching on who we are in Chirst. I will stop here to let you meditate on these scriptures and do some digging on your own if you like. To dig a little deeper use an exhaustive concordance and do a word study on one or more of these words. Blood, covenant, righteousness, power, authority.

Here is a list of some of the things that we are in Christ that we will be taking a deeper look at in the coming weeks:

heirs of God Gal - 4:7, Rom. 8:17
